A charismatic shot of a female green woodpecker darting a quick glance whilst foraging. These woodpeckers are specialist ant eaters and have immensely long tongues which can measure 10Cm in length. They are the largest woodpeckers found in the UK and are truly spectacular in flight, demonstrating tropical shades of red and green. Heavily grazed grassland and mowed parks and gardens provide suitable foraging for this species, particularly if there are visible ant nests. In the UK they tend to feed predominantly on black garden ants and wood ants, though a study of a nest in Romania found that 10 species of ant were fed to the chicks. Listen out for their loud laughing call and dipping short bursts of flight.
