Consumerism Seems To Be Unavoidable… So Be Savvy About It

In an age of ever-increasing environmental awareness, particularly of how our everyday actions can affect the environment, there are multiple ways to reduce our waste and think more carefully about the products that we buy. If we must be consumers, then let’s be savvy about it. Here are 5 ways you can help make a difference.

This post isn’t about selling or endorsing products, just drawing your attention to alternative products that are much more sustainable than some currently out there, and others that go towards funding conservation work and supporting local businesses.

 

1. Who Gives A Crap?

Well, we should. Aussie/UK company Who Gives A Crap sells environmentally/forest friendly toilet paper and kitchen paper which is packed individually in paper packaging, that is not only recyclable itself but looks attractive too. So no more hiding your loo roll in cupboards. On top of this, Who Gives A Crap donates 50% of its profits to help build toilets for those most in need of them in developing countries.

 

2. Birch Artic Series

Wonderful World Studios presents *drum roll* the Artic Series. An innovative design, these refillable water bottles are made from stainless steel and their appearance can be changed between wood, recycled plastics, and leather – all sustainably sourced. It’s machine washable, and 3% of the proceeds from sales go towards three worthy charitable organisations, decided by you, the public.

 

3. Chocolate and Love

Chocolate and Love is, quite simply, divine. These moreish bars of chocolatey goodness (I mean, chocolate comes from a plant… right?) are Fairtrade, organic, and ethical, with a range of delicious flavours that are gluten-free, GMO-free, and free from additives and soya lecithin. Their chocolate also contains less sugar but doesn’t compromise on taste, and some bars are also ideal for vegans. Not only is their chocolate high quality but the company aims to be as sustainable as possible too; all of their packaging is made from recycled material and is recyclable in turn – even the foil wrapping is biodegradable, having being made from sustainably harvested wood. What’s not to love?

 

4. Kaffee Form

An inspirational business, Kaffee Form takes waste ground coffee from the cafes and restaurants of Berlin and uses renewable energy to transform them into water resistant, dishwasher-safe cappuccino (200ml) and espresso (60ml) cups and accompanying saucers. They are lightweight, durable, and smell ever so faintly of coffee – I should know, I saw them for sale in a trendy coffee shop/homeware store in Berlin and picked one up. Despite dropping it on the floor (whoops), it was fine!

 

5. Bamboo Toothbrushes

It is a subject that is being brought to our attention more frequently as time goes by – plastic toothbrushes often end up in our oceans and on our beaches. The Ethical Superstore sells a range of sustainable and Fair Trade bamboo toothbrushes that have BPA-free bristles, which are either medium or soft, and can be composted once you’ve finished with them (remove the bristles first though).

 

There are so many more ways that we can reduce our impact on our environment through buying products sensibly and with a thought to how they are produced, but sometimes it’s best to start off with little steps and take it from there.

If wildlife conservation is important to us, then thinking about our own impact on the environment is essential. We can’t wait for governments to take action because often they are influence by powerful lobby groups. As individuals, we can create more demand for sustainable products and businesses will respond. Consumerism is here to stay, but mindless consumerism has to go!
